This novel is the last work written by the Austrian author, Stefan Zweig, attempting to critique humanity and dismantle the conflict that manifests in the simplest of things, which is chess. It is a game that was originally meant for passing time, exercising the mind, and stimulating intelligence. However, it has turned into a fierce war, where the players, represented by stones on a small divided board of two colors, black and white, engage in a battle to prove who is stronger.
